Baitul Mukarram National Mosque is located in Paltan area, very close to Gulistan, the heart of Dhaka . On January 27, 1960, the then owner of Bawani Jute Mills, the prominent industrialist Latif Bawani and his nephew Yahya Bawani, took the initiative to build the National Mosque of Bangladesh, Baitul Mokaram. 8.30 acres of land was allocated in Paltan for the Baitul Mukarram Mosque designed by AH Tharani, a prominent architect of Sindh. The construction of the mosque was completed in 1962.
In order to provide variety in the design of the mosque, the dome has been avoided and the square structure has been made in the style of Kaaba house. There are various shops and warehouses on the ground floor of Baitul Mukarram Mosque with 8 floors. The 2nd to 6th floor of the mosque is used for offering prayers. Khatib leads prayers from the 2nd floor. On the north side of the 3rd floor there is a women's prayer room. About 30,000 worshipers can pray at Baitul Mukarram Mosque at the same time. The mosque has separate entrances on the north, south and east sides.
Since March 28, 1975, Islamic Foundation Bangladesh has been entrusted with the maintenance of Baitul Mukarram Mosque. The expansion of the mosque was done in 2008 with funding from the Saudi government. Every Friday, a large number of people from far and wide come to Baitul Mukarram Mosque to offer Friday prayers.
