Chunakhola Masjid Bagerhat

Chunakhola Mosque, a unique monument of ancient antiquity, is located in Chunakhola village of Chatagombuj Union, 35 km away from Bagerhat district. It is believed that in the 15th century, a loyal employee of Hazrat Khan Jahan (RA) built this mosque in medieval architecture. Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (RA) set up lime pits for the production of lime required for use in various establishments. As a result, the mosque built with terracotta decoration came to be known as Chunakhola Mosque.

Built during the Sultanate period, the square Chunkhola Mosque with half dome is 49 feet on the outside, 25 feet on the inside and the length of each outer wall is 12.50 meters. The mosque has 4 minarets at the four corners, 3 elaborate mihrabs on the western wall and a total of 5 entrances on the east, north and south sides. The terracotta decoration of the mosque walls with various motifs including flowers and vine leaves is particularly noteworthy. The mosque was declared a historical monument in 1975. In 1983, UNESCO included the historic Chunkhola Mosque as a “World Cultural Heritage”.

Bagerhat in Khulna can be reached by bus or train from Dhaka. You can go from Dhaka to Bagerhat by buses like Dola Paribahan, Welcome Express, Falguni Paribahan, Sakura Paribahan, Hanif Enterprise, Sohag Paribahan and Eagle Paribahan from Gulisthan and Sayedabad in Dhaka via Padma Bridge. These buses cost 650 to 800 taka per person. You can go to Bagerhat via Khulna by inter-city Chitra Express or Sundarban Express train from Kamalapur Railway Station to Khulna.

Chunakhola Masjid is just a few minutes walk from Sixty-domed Masjid by rickshaw from Bagerhat town.
