Shaitta Banyan Tree Dhamrai

Shaitta is a village located in Jadavpur Union of Dhamrai Upazila of Dhaka. The ancestors of the Devidas clan of Shaitta village planted a pakur tree and a banyan tree side by side about 500 years ago. Local orthodox people consider these two trees as gods. So they built an ink temple under the shade of a tree.

Currently, there are many beliefs about these two trees in the minds of the local people. According to the traditional belief, the pakur tree is considered as male and the banyan tree is considered as female. According to many people, if someone cuts a branch of a tree, he gets sick. It is not possible to get cured from that illness except by offering puja. So none of the locals cut the tree branches.

No one usually goes near this tree at night due to the prevalence of various ghostly phenomena. Even if it is necessary to widen the road passing under the tree, the local chairman diverts the road so that no branch of the tree has to be cut. Due to these reasons, the branches and roots of the trees have easily spread over about 5 bigha of land. Every year on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh various events are organized under the Shaitta banyan tree.

If you want to go from Gabtali bus stand in Dhaka , you have to take a bus going to Manikganj and come to a place called Dhulivita. Then take an auto from Dhulivita to Dhamrai Bazar and from there you have to hire an auto to Shaitta village of Jadavpur union.

Also from Gabtali bus stand of Dhaka public service or S.B. Come to Chare Mahishashi Bazar by Link minibus. Kushura has to come from Mahishashi Bazar on CNG. Then you can go to Shaitta by auto again from Kushra.

And if you want to see the Shaytta banyan trees directly, you can take a bus from Gulistan to Dhamrai and reach Dhamrai, and from there you can hire a rickshaw or an auto to go to Shaita.
